1)Cesar Estrada Chavez (1927-1993)

Chavez was a Mexican-American labor leader who used nonviolent tactics to try and better farm labor. Chavez promoted strikes for migrant workers, himself and anyone who wanted to join. Not only did Chavez promote strikes but he also used to fast to try and get the violence between strikers to end. Chavez attempted many identical things that Gandhi did, and just like Gandhi it became a success. All in all , Chavez believed the injustice upon migrant farm workers was able to improve; his motto was "si se puede" (Yes it can happen.)

2)Fidel Castro(1926-)

Fidel Castro is known for taking over Cuba by force and making it communist. Cuba became the first communist nation within the western hemisphere causing a drastic change and fear within other nations (especially the U.S.) Fidel Castro also became allies with the Soviet Union because they are also pro communism. Fidel Castro has improved health care and education yet his country is lacking self freedom, food shortages and economic hardships. Yet people can not complain if they do they are bound to suffer major consequences because Fidel Castro is known for eliminating anything and anyone against him and his ideas.

3)Simon Bolivar (1783-1830)

Simon Bolivar also known as "The liberator" liberated most of an entire continent in South America from Spanish rule. He was very successful indeed. Bolivar's army was not even huge to began with but managed to defeat many battles for many Latin countries freedom. While many spoke about liberty Bolivar was planting surprise attacks to liberate the countries under Spanish rule.

4) José Martí (1853 – 1895)

Jose Marti "father of the Cuban Revolution" was a teacher a translator a writer etc... He was a great writer in the Latin American world. He urged to free Cuba from Spanish rules and planned/ organized what came to be called Cuba's third war of Independence. Marti started the Cuban revolutionary party which helped for the war economically by raising funds and forming a Cuban government that would then hopefully take over once the war was over.Eventually Marti died within the battle but was never forgotten.

5) Christopher Columbus(1451-1506)

Christopher Columbus was a great sailor/explorer whom dreamed of finding a shorter route to India, instead he helped expand the European power to the Americas. On Christopher Columbus's way to "India" he landed on a Caribbean island thinking it was part of India. Columbus discovered new food, resources and new land (although native Americans lived there it was new to European countries because they believed the world was flat.)Up until this day Columbus is known as a hero for his discovery.

1. Túpac Amaru
Tupac Amaru would most likely be considered a hero for the great and strong values he has possesed back then. For one he was the last of his royal family of the Inca Empire. Although he did not have a long lasting leadership position of the Incas, he still is considered the "first indigenous leader to seriously rebel, in an organized way against the Spanish." For this main achievement and many more he is looked upon by the indigenous people of Peru as a strong great symbol of themselves. Although plenty of people do not know who he truely is his legacy still lives on. This name may sound familiar that is because his powerful name was given to rapper/actor Tupac Shakur. For his mother believed in Tupac Amaru as a great inspiration of rebellion and power!

2)Manuela Sáenz
I would most definitely consider Manuela Saenz as a hero. Although plenty say she gets her power from being the mistress of Simon Bolivar that is rarely true. In my eyes Manuela is a hero in a sense of rebellion. She was known to be one of the strongest women in South America at that time and even maybe now. The typical woman is South America was said to sit pretty, watch over children and stay in her place "as a woman." However Manuel decided to challenge these sexist stereotypes put against her. For one, she refused to stay married to the husband that her parents assigned for her. Also she actually fought in the revolution and saved Simon Bolivar's life from assasination. Therefore she is a hero for South America in which her legacy still lives on as well, and towards women because she most definitely brought plenty of power and strength for us to gain rights!

3. Augusto Pinochet

Augusto Pinochet would be mostly considered a villian instead of a hero. He was the dictator of Chile which left a very harmful and negative impact throughout South America. For example on September 11, 1973, he gained power "in a bloody coup" with the help of the UNITED STATES! He did this by making his military take over the government wwith force and weapons. With other bad events, he has left a horrible dark legacy on South America. For one they were abused both mentally(with their rights) and physically with force. With great irony with his abusive actions he claimed to be guided by "the spiritual force force of God as a believer. After he was done rulling Chile was left in great despair dealing with poverty and inflation.

4. La Malinche

Donna Marina also known as Malinche is known to be a hero in Spain but alson a villian in Mexico. This is because she basically used her various languages to help Cortes to defeat the Aztec empire for Mayan victory. Some say she did this in a form of revenge because the Aztecs took over her people, so she felt it was right to give the Aztecs a taste of their own medicine. La Malinche's intelligence also complimented her victory becuse she was able to learn languages quick. For she learned Spanish in only a matter of weeks! Her being such a gifted linguist led her to translate the Aztec to the Spanish exposing their plans and anything else they used to hel wil. Cortes used communication as his most lethal weapon to winning this battle. Therefore she would be a great hero to the Mayans but not towards the Aztecs because they seen her as a traitor.

5. Rigoberta Menchu

Rigoberta Menchu is most definitely a hero for her struggles and achievements. Rigobeta was involved in social reform programs as well as women rights movements when she was only a teenager. Later on in her life her family was tortured and killed one by one for being accused of being apart of guerilla activites. This encouraged Menchu to join the CUC(Commitee of the peasant movement.) From here she prominently figured in a strike for better conditions in work farms and also helped with educating indigenous people.Llater on she had to flee from Guatemala to Mexico from threats towards her. However this did not stop her from bettering her people. She was the first indigenous and youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Menchu will always be remembered for her inevitable strength and dignity!

(1) César Chávez Estrada [March 31, 1927- April 23, 1993]

César Chávez Estrada to me was a hero. Not only was he a civil rights activist, but also a Mexican American farm worker and labor leader. He was a very charismatic. He also founded "United Farm Workers" which was basically a labor movement strongly for his latino descendants.

(2) Fidel Castro [August 13, 1926-]

Fidel Castro is a powerful man and may use his powers to his defense. He can punish those who goes against his ideas. He took over Cuba and turned Cuba into Communist. Those who lived under his governement has a lack of freedom . They cannot do as a democracy government can do. To me he's a villan.

Túpac Amaru II was a leader of an indigenous rebellion in 1780, which had the goal to release Peru from Spanish control. Although the rebellion was unsuccessful, Túpac inspired other revolutionary attempts by Native Americans and Mestizos. About 50 years later the dream of T. Amaru II and others became true when Simon Bolivar let the revolution that gave Peru its independence.

José Martí was a Cuban hero and was referred as “Apostle of Cuban independent”. He created the Cuban Revolutionary Party to fight against the Spanish, who were in control of Cuba. Martí was also an important literature figure. He wrote poems, essays, and founded many newspapers; which help in his campaign for Cuban freedom.

Pedro Albizu Campos was an important figure for the Puerto Rican Independence Movements. He was president of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, created for an only goal “independence”. Pedro visited many others Latin American countries for help in declaring freedom. Pedro was also call “El Maestro” for his devotion to education.

Augusto Pinochet was commander in chief of the Chilean army in 1972. In 1973-1974, Augusto overthrows president Salvador Allende and was appointed president by the militia. In his 16 years regimen, thousands of people were killed and imprisoned, and over 30,000 people were tortured.

La Malinche was a woman native to Mexico and who spoke two native languages (Mayan and Nahuatl). She was the interpreter, advisor and lover of Hernan Cortes. Malinche’s role was to be a reliable translator but her influence was much greater because she was one of the reasons that Mexico’s languages were understood by the foresters.

Augusto Pinochet

Augusto Pinochet born Nov. 25 1915 and died on Dec. 10 2006 he was the general of the chilean army and later named president of Chile. Pinochet was a pure
evil dictator who enforced communism, he executed at least 3,197 in the coup d'etat in 1973. His military and him attempted to get ride of all the missing peoples body but didnt turn out successfully, bodies that were dumped in the ocean were being pushed back to shore which was evidence that he violated human right. He's just a wannabe Hitler!

Albizu Campos

Albizu Campos aka "El Maestro"was a dedicated political leader for his country. He would be known as a Puerto Rican Malcolm X who stood up for what he believes in. Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico became a major force in the fight for independence because of him, he encouraged his people to regain their cultural history, and national symbol. He contributed in strikes, Boycotting elections and military services. He has sacraficed most of his life for the freedom of Puerto Rico and they should continue to fight for their independence.

Hugo Chavez

Hugo Chavez born July, 28 1954 who is the president of Venezula who founded the Bolivarian Revolutionary Movement in 1982 which was to get Venezula and other South american countries in order. Chavez's supporters see him as a populist leader and champion of the poor, he interacted alot with the people and took their advice for consideration. On several occasions he has been out in the poor communities giving land deeds to people for newly allotted land, inspecting the work of the military, and talking to the common men and women of Venezuela. Over all the only negative hes committed was trying to over throw the president before him.

La malinche

Dona Marina born on 1496 and died around 1551 in the gulf coast as an aztec. She was a slave but bacame a mistress to Cortes and his baby mother. She saved a lot of indians lives by negotiating rather then killing them, but they called her a traitor and harlot. Her ability to communicate to the Spaniards introduced Christianity and she tried to stop human sacrifice and cannibalism fopr the people sack. She knew how to pick up a new language very well, so she became Corteses translator for the mayan language. Later on she was given the name "La Machelina" also known as Marinas Captain because they were stuck together like white on rice. So in my eyes i see La malinche as a true hero!

Manuela Saenz

Manuela Saenz born in 1797 and died 1856 was an ecuadorian noblewoman and lover of Simon Bolivar before and during the South american independence war. She saved Bolivars life when political rivals tried to assassinate him. As we all know Simon Bolivar Had a great inpact on Latin America's independence. Since she saved someone of great significants then she obviously is a hero.

(3) Simón Bolívar [July 24, 1783 – December 17, 1830]

Simón Bolívar was a military and political leader. Even though it was a struggle , he played an important role in hispanic's struggle for independence from the spanish empire. He was in many foundations although he lived a short life. To many latin Americans , he was considered a hero and to me he is considered a hero instead of a villian

(4)Eva Peron [ 7 May 1919 – 26 July 1952]

Maria Eva Duarte De Peron was the Wife of the president in Argentina making her the first lady. Eva Perón became powerful within the pro-Peronist trade unions. She spoke about women's suffrage in Argentina and also founded the first political party for females. She is a hero.

(5)Christopher Colombus
[1451-1506]

Everyone knows that Christopher Colombus was a great sailor and he so called "found America" but in reality it was there already. Everyone see's him as hero but that torture he put people through when he so called found the America's makes you think .. was he a hero???? To me he WASNT a hero. Thanks to l.a. class , Christopher Colombus is finally exposed . Behind all good things are hidden secrets , and his torture to those whose been in the Americas is unacceptable but believe hes a hero and keep celebrating him. your celebrating a man whose tortured those behind his great success..

1. Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro is a well known figure in Latin America and globally for his lasting effects in Latin America.
Castro was the dictator of Cuba for almost fifty years, he started a the Cuban revolution that changed Cuba and other nations. In 1953 Castro led an attack on the Cuban military at the time, the Mon coda Barracks, but this attack failed. He was then imprisoned, exiled and then released, it was only a matter of time before his next attempt. Castro then successfully overthrew the current dictator and he was declared prime minister. He then has many relations with foreign nations such as the US and the USSR. During his rule he is also known for violating the human rights of thousands, people were imprisoned or killed under his rule. Castro's communist ideology didn't work out too well for Cuban citizens and it shows today.

2. Christopher Columbus.

Columbus is known as one of the most important explorers that changed the lives of many future generations today. Columbus was the person who recognized the Americas for Europe. He always though the world was round and not flat and though he could reach to Asia from this route. Columbus reached to the Bahamas in 1492 and is known for identifying the Americas. The Colombian exchange then started between Europe and the Americas then started. Today it is debated weather or not Columbus is a hero and should be respected with a national holiday. Columbus started a genocide of the Native Americans in 1492 along with his exportation. The killing, raping, and torturing of the Native people cannot be ignored. Some people say Columbus started slavery as well because it started 10 years after 1492 in the Americas. Columbus was good in some ways but bad in most ways, but without Columbus America would not exist.

3. Hugo Chavez

Currently the president of Venezuela Chavez is politically a controversial person. Elected in 1999 Chavez changed the constitution that increased the presidents term from five to six years and limit the number terms a president can be in power to two terms. People have protested in support of Chavez and against him at times. Chavez changed his path to a more socialized role after he was reelected and agreed to help the people in his country equally. Chavez's relationship with the US was always complicated he is against the US in many ways. He has been accused of human rights violations and having weak policies. As controversial as he is Chavez was included as time magazines 100 most influential people in 2005 and 2006.

4. Simon Bolivar

Simon Bolivar was a strong Latin American leader in South America. Bolivar helped many nations in South America to independence and he was the president of four nations in South America. He believed in liberation and he admired both the French Revolution and American Revolution. Simon Bolivar fought for liberation in South America for six countries and he achieved his goal. Bolivar started liberation and left a legacy in Latin America as a revolutionary leader.

5. Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chavez was Mexican American civil rights activist who fought for labor workers. Chavez grew with a family that were migrant farm workers who didn't have it easy. They had to migrate for jobs and ended up losing their farm due to taxes. The workers experienced hard work and were paid next to nothing. He experienced the terrible labor conditions with his family and had to act on it. Chavez used non violent ways to protect and stand up for workers rights. In the end Chavez helped out the labor workers until they got what they deserved which was better wages and working conditions. Chavez is looked up to as a example of what change can be accomplished if someone try's hard enough.
