Didnt we give Haiti over 5 bilion dollars shouldnt that be more than enough to renovate and repair....
Well what did the French do for Haiti after the Earthquake occurred??
Is Haiti independent yet?

The "independence debt" is money that had Haiti payed France for the losses of the plantation owners in 1825, since they became independent and slavery was out lawed the plantation owners lost a lot of money. The debt is 22 billion dollars (NY Times estimate) They really need the money, being the poorest country in the western hemisphere and the 230,000 confirmed dead from the earth quake. Also France did cause lead Haiti's economy in a bad direction from 1825, taking 22 billion dollars from them because slavery ended and they couldn't make anymore money. Maybe if they had the 22 billion dollars in 1825 they would be a rich nation today even after the earthquake.

I feel bad for Haiti, the situation is funny though. It's like "hey im going through a harsh time so let me think of someone in the past i can drag down with me." The article made me laugh, every country is funny in their own way but i understand Haiti is in need of alot of money because of the earth quake. what is france going to do?

for me haiti is so unorganized. even thought they are hard workers, they don't think. i had seen some almost starving; however, still going for the other child. they got like 5 to 8 children. they don't got money, not even shelter, including before the earthquake.

Money is such a issue these days that im kind of not surprized that haiti is in debt. they need food, water, shelter, clothing and education. which is alot because we struggle everyday and we are in the so called "land of the free". Land of the free my ass tax always have to go up and people struggling to get jobs. im just saying before we help someone else like haiti we need to learn how to help ourselves

We see now that haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world so i can imagine when they were told about 200 yrs ago to pay that it must have been the most difficult thing in haitit's history to do, According to (http://colorlines.com/archives/2010/08/letter_urges_french_repay_haitis_independence_debt.html)

"The debt was originally imposed in 1825 by French Monarch Charles X after the country’s former slave owners demanded compensation. The debt was ultimately reduced, but Haiti didn’t pay it off until 1947."

the united states has helped haiti recently with this earthquake but what happens when the united states starts looking for place to take over or even tax?!
